The Silver Fox Challenge and Country Fair

I was recently invited to do a Western riding demonstration at the prestigious Hambleden Estate for the silver fox Challenge and country Fair on 27th September.

This is the second year that I have been invited to be part of the displays, and I was really excited to be invited back to this beautiful country estate.

The country fair is named after the annual event, the Silver fox challenge, the race is run as a relay race over a mirror image course. It is judged on a time basis with seconds being deducted for every fence knocked down. There are two teams of four riders racing head to head over a course of daunting fences. The whole event designed as a prelude to the start of the fox hunting season.

My demonstration was rather low key in comparison, but was well appreciated by the audience who asked lots of questions afterwards.

I was in a tiny grass arena, with a bird of prey display on one side and a children’s play area on the other! It was rather a “challenge” in itself especially for Mikey (Little Foxey Knoxie) who had never had to perform with Raptors eyes staring at him before. Even with all the distractions, I was very pleased at how he knuckled down to his job, and was able to show how supple and obedient a Western trained horse can be. The surface would not allow for any flashy Reining manoeuvres but some sharp stops, and slow spins were much appreciated by the audience as were the half passes and flying changes.

I was asked to do the demonstration twice during the day, and each time drew quite a crowd. All in all it was a lovely day, with the sun shining on us and I look forward to the opportunity of taking part again next year.
